About the Fayette County Historical Society
Fayette County Historical Society was organized in 1926 by
J.T. Peters and H.B. Carden who had written and published the original Fayette
County History.
No record of activities of the Society have been found until 1948 when the Rev.
Shirley Donnelly reactivated the Society and served as its President until his
resignation in 1964. The objective of the Historical Society is to
preserve the past for the future.
In 1942, the tract of land of over 135 acres was deeded by
executors of Angia Imboden Taylor's will to J.A. Nunnery a local real estate
developer who divided the tract into lots and began to sell them. In 1960
the Rev. Shirley Donnelly with the support from the Society, raised $3,500.00 by
popular subscription to buy the property which is now the home of The Fayette
County Historical Society.
Today the Fayette County Historical Society is working on
reaching out to the greater community of Fayette County and building a registrar
of the many historical sites here. One of our goals is to gain community
interest and cooperation the help us keep our historical sites and the history
that lives in them alive and available to all future generations. West
Virginia is rich in history and culture. Our members come from all over
the United States. There is no age limit for members, we hope to interest
the younger generation as well as the old so that we may leave what we have
learned and accomplished to those who follow so that they may carry on and build
to it.
The Fayette County Historical Society is governed by a Board of Trustees from
which the Society's officers are elected.
Fayette County Historical Society is a non-profit
organization under the laws of the State of West Virginia.
